The text is translated from Francis Hendricq's abridgement of Luke Wadding's Annals of the Friars Minor (Annales Minorum). The translator is unknown. It may have been Elizabeth Evelinge (Sr Catherine Magdalen) although Catherine Bentley's name (Sr Magdalen Augustine) appears on the title-page. Both were nuns in the Poor Clare convent at Aire in the province of Artois which was founded in 1619. The translation is dedicated 'to the most high and mighty princess Mary Henriette, Queen of Great Britain, France and Ireland and sovereign lady of the isles of the British ocean', namely, Henrietta Maria, the Catholic wife of King Charles I. The book is divided into fifty-five short chapters designed to provide a cycle of daily readings. It also include the Life of St Clare and accounts of contemporary Franciscan martyrs and missionaries in South America, Canada, India, China and Japan.
