Philip III to the Archduke Albert, San Lorenzo, 21 September 1606. Most Serene Lord, Friar Florence Conry, provincial of the Irish province of the order of St Francis has explained to me that, due to the persecution by the heretics, the order has suffered a great decline in that kingdom. But despite this, having gone to nothing and become deserted, they have returned to some monasteries which have remained, to rebuild and maintain them. For this reason and as studies are prohibited, the old preachers that they had have gone. He begs that, in order that they are not entirely extinguished and to have the Catholic faith flourish in that kingdom, to help learned members of the said order by providing annual alms during the persecution by which a number of young friars can be supported in their studies at the University of Louvain.
And by reasons referred to, and other just considerations to the service of God, I have shown them favour and alms of 1000 ducados per annum, for as long as I shall wish. Your Highness will order that from the above date onwards to provide the rector or person in charge of the said religious with the said 1000 ducados per annum so that they can study and support themselves. They will be paid from the money provided for the army, punctually. I consider this for good, in spite of orders to the contrary which I dispense with, remaining in force and in effect from now onwards. May Our Lord protect your Highness as I desire. From San Lorenzo, 21 September 1606. Good Brother of your Highness, I the King. Andrés de Prada [Secretary]. To the most serene Lord Archduke Albert my brother. San Lorenzo His Majesty to His Majesty, 21 September 1606. Franciscan Fathers of Ireland. Dorso: Letter of the king for our alms.
